Alwin Peter Schutt, one of three children of George Henry and Minnie Christina (Merkert) Schutt, was born at the family farm in Yorkshire Township near Persia, Iowa on October 20, 1914. When Alwin was a young boy, the family moved to a farm near Minden, Iowa. Alwin attended country school just across the road from their home, and after completing the eighth grade, joined his parents in operating the family farm. During the Depression, Alwin worked building bridges in the Minden area for the Work Progress Administration. Alwin helped his father with a team of pulling horses that were three-time state champions. Alwin's father died in 1944 and Alwin continued to operate the family farm.
Alwin and Elsa Margaretha Kay were married on September 21, 1947 at St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola, Iowa. They continued to live on the family farm and their marriage was blessed with three children, Karen, Alwin, and Karla. Alwin received several awards for soil conservation during his farming career. Alwin and Elsa retired, sold their farm, and moved to Shelby, Iowa in 1977. In 1979, they moved to Mineola where they lived with Elsa's mother and helped take care of her and the farm. After Mrs. Kay's death, Alwin and Elsa moved to Glenwood, Iowa where they lived until 1994, and then moved to their present home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Their three granddaughters, Kenda, Emily, and Miranda provided much joy in Alwin's life.
Alwin died at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs on September 15, 2002. He had attained the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 25 days. Alwin was preceded in death by his parents and his three-year old brother George. He is survived by his wife Elsa of nearly 55 years; children Karen Schutt of Blair, Nebraska, Alwin Schutt and his wife Cindy of Council Bluffs, and Karla Schulze of Fremont, Nebraska; sister Ethel Schutt of Council Bluffs; grandchildren Kenda Harris, Emily Schulze, and Miranda Schulze; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
