Betty L. Maddocks

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Betty Louise Maddocks, one of six children of Jeannette Marion (Lamping) and Louis Severn Olson, was born at Thompson, Iowa on April 21, 1931. Betty graduated from Sioux City High School in January of 1949.
Betty and Earl Maddocks, Jr. were married on April 17, 1949 at Titonka, Iowa. After living in the Iowa towns of Bloomfield, Mount Ayr, and Winterset, Betty and Earl moved to a farm east of Glenwood, Iowa in 1954. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Bruce, Carol, Earl, Alan, and James. Farming was a large part of Earl and Betty's life, and Betty was a true farm wife, helping with the daily chores of raising chickens, gathering eggs, raising calves and managing the dairy herd. Betty could be found on the tractor helping Earl during the planting and harvesting seasons.
Betty was active in the Silver City United Methodist Church and a leader for the Loyal Lassies and Ingraham Straight Shooters 4-H clubs. As the children became older, Betty began to work in the community. She worked at the Glenwood State Hospital School for many years, first as a direct care worker, then as a Practical Nurse in the hospital unit and later as a Registered Nurse. Betty earned her Practical Nurse Diploma from Iowa Western Community College in 1969 and in 1980, earned her Associate Degree of Nursing from the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. After Betty retired from nursing, she enjoyed working for several years in the gift shops at the Ameristar and Bluffs Run Casinos in Council Bluffs.
Betty became suddenly ill on October 30, 2003 and entered the Manor of Malvern Nursing Home on November 6th. Betty and Earl had been married for 54 years when Betty died at the Manor on November 28, 2003. She had attained the age of 72 years, 7 months, and 7 days. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, son Bruce in 2000, and brother Richard Olson.
Betty is survived by her husband Earl Maddocks of Glenwood; children, Carol Maxwell and her husband Eric of Glenwood, Earl (Bud) Maddocks and his wife Donna of Wasilla, Alaska, Alan and wife Theresa of Hollywood, FL, and James Maddocks and his companion Sandy of Montezuma, Iowa; daughter-in-law June Maddocks of Glenwood; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; sister Lorraine Kiester and her husband Doug of Pine River, MN, brothers Jerry Olson and his wife Arlene of Prior Lake, MN, Roger Olson and his wife Shirley of Eagan, MN, and Marlin Olson and his wife Linda of Pleasantville, IA; sister-in-law Ruby Olson of Richfield, MN; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
