He grew up in rural Hastings and attended Golden Hill School, the Hastings and Strahan Schools, and the North Grove rural school where he graduated from the 8th grade. Eventually they moved into Malvern where Jack continued to do farm work for Donnie Schroeder until his retirement.

Among Jack's enjoyments were hunting and fishing, playing cards, and pitching horse shoes. He and Dorothy had been married for 49 years when she passed away on April 25, 1996. Jack remained in their home until he eventually moved to an apartment at the Malvern Village.
