Darrel attended school in Carson and graduated from the Carson High School in 1944. Following graduation, Darrel worked with his father on the farm until he was drafted into the United States Army. Darrel was stationed in Hawaii during World War II and worked in the motor pool. He returned home from the service in 1946 and became acquainted with Betty Mae Marrs of Tingley, IA.
