Don T. Smith

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Donald Truman Smith, one of four children of Marie Henrietta (Sornsen) Smith and Russell Augustus Smith, was born on his parent's farm near Macedonia, Iowa on August 6, 1918. Don attended Valley No. 5 Country School and graduated from the Macedonia Community High School in May of 1935. He then began working full time on the family farm. Don joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. It was here that Don was assigned to an open cab half-track. During a winter training exercise, Don was subjected to severe cold and rain, and as a result, he and eight other young men lost most of their hearing. Don was medically released from the Army and returned home to the farm.
Don and Opal Irene Stocker were married at the Macedonia United Methodist Church on June 19, 1949 and made their home on the Smith family farm. Don always enjoyed the farm and livestock and broke horses for many years. In 1967, he suffered a fall from the hayloft of the barn, breaking his neck. Don recovered from his fall and returned to farming. Don and Opal had been married 48 years when Opal died on November 24, 1997. Don continued to live and remain active on the farm and worked cattle with Sherwood Bentley and his family.
Don was a member of the Macedonia United Methodist Church and Past Commander of the Macedonia American Legion Post No. 648.
Don moved to the Woodlands Rehabilitation Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa on January 11, 2005. He died at the Center on January 7, 2007 at the age of 88 years, 5 months, and 1 day.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife Opal Smith; brother Jack Smith: sisters Margaret Thomas and Virginia Neal and her husband William. He is survived by his brother-in-law John Thomas of Shenandoah, IA and sister-in-law Opal Smith Viner of Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, IA; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nephews; and many friends.
