Donald William Schultz

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Donald William Schultz, the second oldest of four children of Ida M.(Schwartz) and Adolph Kia Schultz, was born on June 30, 1907 on the farm near Silver City, Iowa.
Donald attended the Evergreen Country School through the eighth grade and then went to Silver City High School where he graduated in 1924. After high school he attended Iowa State University in Ames for one year. After completing his education, Donald worked at home on the farm and did custom farm work for several years. In the spring of 1939, he bought a farm west of Macedonia, Iowa.

Donald and Eleanor Louise (Galt) Frazier were married on August 4, 1939 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They made their home on the farm and the first years of their marriage were spent clearing and fencing the farm. They had 2 sons, Duane and Randy.

Donald was an avid collector of antique single cylinder gasoline engines, farm tractors and steam engines. He also restored and hand built several miniature tractors, steam engines and gasoline engines. The pursuit of this hobby allowed Donald and his young family to travel extensively. During the 1950's and 60's they took many family vacations to the western, southern and northern United States and into Canada. Donald was a long time member of the Green Ridge Antique Association and was well known and liked among other collectors.

In addition to farming and collecting, Donald worked on several construction projects including the concrete bridge over the West Nishna Botna River west of Macedonia and paving the road from S.R. 92 to Silver City. He worked several years for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services (ASCS) constructing bins, maintaining bin-sites and tending stored government grain. He helped build the new elementary school in Treynor. Donald also operated a Caterpillar bulldozer for his brother Eldon and together they built many miles of terraces in Mills and Pottawattamie Counties.

Donald and Eleanor had been married 63 years at the time of her death on February 7, 2003. Donald continued to live at home and remained active until moving to Oakland Manor in January of 2008. He passed away at the Manor on May 7, 2008 at the age of 100.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eleanor; stepson Keith Frazier; sisters, Wilma Schultz and Arline Schultz; brother Eldon Schultz and wife Velma; and brother-in-law Harold Galt.
