Dorothy M. Carrick

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Dorothy Maxine Carrick, one of four children of Jessie Louise (Scott) and James Boyd Huston, was born near Guthrie Center, Iowa on December 3, 1927. She attended school at Guthrie Center until moving with her family to Bagley, Iowa. Dorothy graduated from Bagley High School in 1944 and then began working as a clerk in a store in Guthrie Center.
On March 2, 1947, Dorothy married Vern LeRoy Carrick at the United Methodist Church in Bagley. They made their first home in Bayard, Iowa, later moving to Le Roy, Minnesota and then eventually moving to Scranton, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Joyce, James, and Julie. In 1962, the family moved to Oakland, Iowa where Dorothy worked alongside Vern and Jim at Carrick Farm Supply. In later years, Dorothy worked the early morning shift at the Riverside Before & After School Program. Sports fans will remember Dorothy as the faithful ticket seller for local events. She continued to serve her community as a volunteer at the Nishna Heritage Museum and delivered meals on wheels. She enjoyed events at the Oakland Senior Center and time spent with her friends. Dorothy's greatest enjoyment was her family and she and Vern always attended her children and grandchildren's sporting and fine arts events. She was an excellent homemaker who was able to manage her time with working, housekeeping, and volunteering.
Vern's health forced him to move to the Avoca Nursing Center in Avoca, Iowa in August of 2002. Dorothy and Vern had been married 57 years when Vern died on August 13, 2004. Dorothy continued to live in Oakland and was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. She had spent only a few days at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home where she died on August 14, 2007 at the age of 79 years, 8 months, and 12 days. In addition to her husband Vern, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Lloyd Huston.
