Glenwood, Iowa
Dorothy Margaret (Bowley) Kahl, one of three children of Maggie Belle (Eby) Bowley and Henry Claus Bowley, was born July 19, 1911 in South Omaha, Nebraska. Dorothy grew up in the Glenwood area and graduated from the 8th grade at West Oak rural school and then attended Glenwood High School.
On December 12, 1928, Dorothy and Albert Deitlef Kahl were married by Pastor O.C. Bierman at the St. John Lutheran Church parsonage in Mineola, Iowa. They made their first home on a farm south of Mineola, where their son, Duane was born.
Dorothy was baptized and confirmed March 29, 1931 at St. John Lutheran Church. She and Albert were active lifelong members where Albert served on the church council and Dorothy taught Sunday School for 18 years. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid and Dorcas Circle, as well as one of the quilting ladies.
On February 21, 1933, Dorothy and Albert moved to a farm southeast of Mineola where they made their home and continued farming. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary December 12, 1978 at St. John Lutheran Church. They were honored in May of 1979 as a 50-year livestock shipper to the Omaha stockyards.
Albert and Dorothy had been married almost 51 years at the time of Albert's death on July 21, 1979 at the age of 76 years. Dorothy continued to live on the farm and was known as the Mineola taxi. If anyone had a doctor's appointment, needed a ride to meetings, church or just to town, she was there. She continued being involved with the SW IA Heritage Club, Senior Citizens in Silver City, Mineola Community Center and the Blue Bird Sewing Cub, which she, Katie (Wagner) Roenfeld and Violet (Schoening) Decker formed when they were in their teens.
In 1999, Dorothy left her home of 62 years and moved to the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She died at Risen Son on January 12, 2006, IA at the age of 94 years, 5 months, and 23 days.
