Edith McCullough Brown was born November 12, 1920 to William and Hannah (Voorhees) McCullough near Olpe, Kansas. She graduated from St. Joseph High School and attended Emporia State Teachers' College to earn her teaching certificate. She trained in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was assigned to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California as a Duty NCO. After her discharge in June 1946, she returned to Emporia State to work toward her degree.
On December 26, 1946, Edith was married to Peter Michael Brown of Olpe. The couple remained in college until Peter's graduation in May, 1947. He became a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Edith worked in the Methodist Church and worked extensively with the Girl Scouts.
After moving to Charles City, Iowa, Edith also continued with correspondence courses and attended summer college sessions in 1976. Her proud family celebrated with Edith as she graduated from Emporia State with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1979, Edith, Pete and Mark moved to Malvern, Iowa. Peter directed the Randolph Development Corporation until his retirement, while Edith worked at the Malvern Public Library.
