Edith June (Irvin) Matthews was born June 21,1934 in Emerson, IA to Ulysses and Jesse Grace Irvin, joining her two older sisters, Bonnie and Julia. Three younger brothers, Jim, John, and Joe later joined the family.
June would share stories of growing up on the farm and playing with her siblings. The family connections were strong and she remained close to her siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, with many of them referring to her as their favorite aunt. She especially enjoyed visiting with everyone at the yearly family reunions, where she enjoyed playing cards and taking part in the cornhole tournament, beating out many younger players and taking third place at the age of 89 in 2023. She especially enjoyed listening to her children “discussing” who was her favorite child.
June was active in the UMW at the Carson Methodist Church, and also joined the Rebecca Lodge, attending meetings with her mother. In her later years she joined the Carson Presbyterian Church, taking part in the women's group and mission activities.
In 2020 she moved to an independent living facility in Johnston, Iowa to be closer to where her daughter Dorothy lives. She took part in many of the activities that were offered and especially enjoyed painting both by free hand and paint by number kits. Diamond dots later joined in her crafts, and she could often be found playing Scrabble and card games with other residents. She kept Yahtzee, Skipbo, and a deck of cards handy when family members visited, and had very recently taught her two great-granddaughters how to play King’s Corner.
June was a 75-year alumnus of Macedonia High School. She was married to Donald Matthews on April 21, 1951, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before his death. To their union eight children were born; Diana, Donald, Richard (Laurie), Gene (Shelly), Dorothy Winter (David), Rebecca, Doris Henry (Roger), and Larry. She dearly loved becoming a grandmother and made sure to have plenty of push up pops in her freezer for her grandkids to enjoy. Courtney (Jake) Skelly, Brittany (David Puterbaugh) Matthews, Melanie Matthews, Shelly (Chris) Chadd, Michael (Betsy) Raes, Ashley (Tyler) Harms, Andrew (Jessica) Winter, Timothy Winter, Joshua (Sara) Henry, Jacob (April) Henry, and Elizabeth (Joshua) Spiker each have very fond memories of their dear grandmother and have given her several great-grandchildren to enjoy. She kept all their pictures on her refrigerator door and could name every one of them to the end.
June was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don, sisters Bonnie and Julia, brother Jim, her son Larry and daughters Diana and Rebecca, daughter-in-law Shelly, granddaughter Jennifer, and great-granddaughter Edith.
