Elizabeth (Bettie) Roberson

Elizabeth Fannie Roberson, one of nine children of Mabel (Leonard) and Martin Leander Wilson, was born on December 13, 1910 in Trail, Oklahoma in Dewey County. Elizabeth, familiarly known as Bettie, grew up and attended grade school in Trail. In 1925, the family moved to Glenwood, Iowa and Bettie graduated from Glenwood High School in 1930. Bettie moved to Battle Creek, Michigan where she met Edward Slocum and her first son, Edward, was born. Bettie and Edward later moved to Glenwood.

Bettie and John C. Roberson of Macedonia, Iowa were married on January 28, 1939 in Rock Port, Missouri. They established their home on a farm near Macedonia and their marriage was blessed with ten children: Bernard John, DyAnna Carol, Jessie Pearl, Maynard Martin, Nadine Elizabeth, Willard Myron, Kathryn Mae, Leonard Ivan, Donna Marie, and Theresa Mabel. Bettie and John had owned and operated their farm for over 30 years at the time of his death on August 14, 1968.

Bettie continued to live in Macedonia and then moved to Glenwood and worked for over 15 years as a foster grandparent at the Glenwood State Hospital School. In 2001, Bettie moved to the Red Oak Good Samaritan Home in Red Oak, Iowa. She died at the Good Samaritan on October 29, 2004, at the age of 93 years, 10 months, and 17 days.

Bettie's enjoyments included gardening and flowers, quilting, crafts, and she was an avid reader. She enjoyed teaching the preschool Sunday school children at the Macedonia Methodist Church for 15 years.
Bettie was preceded in death by her parents; husband John C. Roberson; daughters Donna Roberson and Theresa Curtis; daughter-in-law Norma Roberson; grandson David Gibler; great-grandson Ryan Knoke; brothers Clifford Wilson, Jake Wilson, Claude Wilson, and Johnnie Wilson.

Bettie is survived by her children: Bernard Roberson and wife Karen of Carson, Iowa, DyAnna Brown and husband Johnnie of Aurora, Nebraska, Jessie McKinney of North Carolina, Maynard Roberson of Henderson, Iowa, Nadine Boeger and husband Kenneth of Red Oak, Iowa, Willard Roberson and wife Doris of Kansas City, Missouri, Kathryn Gibler of Macedonia, Iowa, Leonard Roberson of Coshocton, Ohio, and Edward Slocum Sr. and wife Emily of Sumter, South Carolina; brothers Edward Wilson of Watkins, Colorado and Fred Wilson of Rickets, Iowa; sisters Pauline Helms of Galesburg, Illinois, and Anita Stogdill of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 24 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
