Elmer Von Weihe

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Elmer Henry Von Weihe was born October 1, 1916, on the family farm near McClelland, Iowa. He was the eldest son of Henry L. and Meta (Westphal) Von Weihe. Elmer was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Treynor, Iowa and attended Washington No. 4, a one-room school, through eighth grade.
Elmer married Dorothy L. Guttau on June 1, 1938. They began farming west of Carson and later purchased land east of Carson, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Marlyn E. and Douglas G. Von Weihe, who by 1974 had joined their father in the family farming operation. In 1993, Elmer retired from farming and he and Dorothy moved to a home in Carson where they enjoyed church and community activities. During his lifetime, Elmer served on the Methodist Church Board, the Carson School Board, and the Farm Bureau Board. He was a 4-H leader and always a good neighbor. Elmer loved music. He loved to play concertina and harmonica. On Christmas Eve, he played the concertina for the family, and his grandchildren loved to dance to his music. Elmer continued to play the harmonica until just a few months prior to his death. Throughout his life, his church was extremely important to him, and he was an active member of the Spring Creek and Carson United Methodist Churches for nearly 60 years. He and Dorothy lived at Oakland Manor Nursing Home when Elmer died on November 25, 2004, at the age of 88 years, 1 month, and 24 days. He and Dorothy had been married 66 years.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife Dorothy, sons Marlyn and his wife Darlene and Douglas and his wife Rebecca, all of Carson; grandsons Daniel Von Weihe of London, England; Mark Von Weihe and his wife Kimberly and great-grandsons Maxwell and Ryan of Raleigh, N.C., Michael Von Weihe, a student at Kansas State, Manhattan, Kansas, and Kerry Von Weihe, a student at Iowa State University, Ames.
