George Winters

–

Glenwood, Iowa

George Francis Leroy Winters, the youngest of three children of Roy and Ona Gayle (Edie) Winters, was born at a farm near Emerson, Iowa on November 30, 1932.
The family moved to Malvern in 1943 and later to an acreage in the northeast part of Malvern, Iowa. In 1955, Chantry Elementary School opened across the street from the Winters home. George was a friendly neighbor to the school and the students were fascinated by the odd looking antique Allis Chalmers Model G tractor George drove on the acreage. His favorite pass time was to hitch the wagon to his tractor and pickup sticks from the yard. George attended the Malvern First Baptist Church and churches in the various communities in which he would later live. George's daily routine included an eleven block walk to the Malvern post office during which he enjoyed long visits with his friends and town's people. In later years, a favorite stop for George was the ice cream shop in Malvern.
George continued to live with his parents until their deaths. He moved to Florida to live with his sister Darlene Shapcott and her husband Duane. They and George moved to Glenwood where George joined the First Baptist Church. George moved to a group home in Red Oak, Iowa and later in Malvern where he quickly became reunited with the town's people. He resumed his daily walks on Malvern's Main Street and visiting with friends. George later moved back to Red Oak and in February of 2004, he moved to the Midland's Living Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. George enjoyed living in Council Bluffs where he could be visited by his sister Nadine and her family.
George died July 4, 2005 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs having attained the age of 72 years, 7 months, and 4 days.
George was preceded in death by his parents; sister Darlene Shapcott, brothers-in-law Paul Durham, Duane Shapcott, and Leland Jensen. He is survived by his sister Nadine (Durham) Jensen, nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends
