Glenwood, Iowa
Lois Lorayne Rollins, the fourth of five children of Effie Bernice (Smith) Wilber and Glen Marion Wilber, was born May 17, 1920, at her parent's home west of Carson, Iowa. Lois attended Pleasant Valley rural school and graduated from Carson High School in 1937. In high school, Lois was voted by fellow classmates as one who gives the most moral support to friends. She loved to play basketball and was captain the night the team won the County B Trophy. While quite young, she and her brother Dudley, cultivated corn. Dudley would sit on the cross-bar guiding the horses, while Lois sat on the seat pushing the shovels into the ground. Times in the 30's were hard and experiencing a drought and the "dust bowl" added to their difficulty.
Lois and Harold Wayne Rollins were united in marriage on March 17, 1938 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They were blessed with five children, Dwayne Darrell, Darrell Lynn, Darla Jean, Donna Lee, and Roxann Marie. Lois enjoyed being a housewife and mother and also partook in all aspects of the farming operations, including disking, harrowing, raking and hauling hay bales. She milked the cows, vaccinated the pigs, and raised chickens. She gardened and canned the produce.
Lois enjoyed having the first Westside Feeders 4-H Club meeting in her home. She was a member of the Carson Presbyterian Church and a member of a group of young couples known as the Mariners Club. Lois lived in a great era and experienced the coming of electricity to the rural areas.
In later years, Lois was one of the first employees to work at Target in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she continued to work for 10 years. Among her enjoyments were cooking, sewing, quilting, and reading. Lois was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her family very much. She was a Christian person and a true friend.
Lois passed away at her home in Carson on April 30, 2010 at the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 13 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Effie Wilber and her son, Darrell Rollins in 2005; brothers, Dale Wilber and wife Helen, LaVern Wilber and wife Eva, and Gola Wilber and wife Wilma.
