Lucille Seipold

Glenwood, Iowa

Lucille Cleophas Seipold, daughter of Frederick Franklin and Cleophas (Smay) Brightenburg, was born January 23, 1915 in Omaha, Nebraska. Lucille was baptized on February 7, 1915 in Omaha. When Lucille was six years old, her mother died and she was sent to Pennsylvania to live with an aunt and uncle for several years. Lucille then moved to the Pacific Junction and Glenwood, Iowa area where she lived with her father and loving stepmother, Daisy (Siemsen) Brightenburg. Lucille graduated from Glenwood High School in 1933, and worked for a short time at the Glenwood State Hospital School.
Lucille and Otto Carl Seipold were united in marriage on February 12, 1936, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Otto Frederick, Raymond Keith, Deanne Lucille, and Karen Elaine. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Glendale, California, where they lived for a brief period of time. She was confirmed on March 21, 1937 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glendale. She and Otto then moved back to Iowa where they farmed in the Hastings and Emerson area. They joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Hastings.
In 1961, Lucille and Otto moved to Glenwood, and transferred their church membership to Trinity Lutheran in Glenwood. In December of 1963, Lucille began working in the dietary department at the Glenwood State Hospital School. Lucille became an active member at Trinity, singing in the choir, serving on the Ladies Aid and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. After 14 years at the State Hospital School, Lucille retired in March of 1977.
Lucille and Otto had been married 43 years when Otto died on March 16, 1979. Following Otto's death, Lucille returned to the State Hospital School, where she served as a foster grandparent from 1980 until 2000. During those 20 years, Lucille experienced great joy and contentment caring for a number of the residents.
Lucille enjoyed caring for her family, baking, working in the garden tending to her flowers and plants. She remained active in her church and was a member of the Mills County Iowans for Life. Lucille was known for her sense of humor and caring ways.
In 2001, Lucille's heath forced her to move to the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she died on March 26, 2007 at the age of 92 years, 2 months, and 3 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother; husband; son Raymond; brothers Donald, John, Mark, Frank, and Joe; half-brothers Robert Brightenburg and Byron Maxwell; sisters Grace Eby, Mary Patton, Florence Michelizzi, and Margaret Brightenburg; and step-sister Stacia Nichols.
