Lynn Sowers

Lynn Ellsworth Sowers, one of four children of Hattie Triplett and Walter Sowers, was born in Henderson, Iowa on July 5, 1919. Lynn grew up in Henderson where he attended school. Looking for work, Lynn and some of the area men traveled throughout the country. Lynn settled in California and worked on an area dairy farm until enlisting in the United States Army. He served as a heavy equipment operator in the European and African Middle Eastern Campaign during World War II. Following the service, Lynn returned to southwest Iowa and lived in Carson with his brother.
Lynn and Joella Alston of Carson were married on November 9, 1946 at Topeka, Kansas. They made their home in Council Bluffs, Iowa and were blessed with their two children, Michael and Vickie. The family moved to Los Angeles, California and Lynn worked as a large crane operator for several years. He and his family then returned to Carson where Lynn began hauling rock. In 1960, Lynn began Sowers Fertilizer and in 1970 purchased the Macedonia Elevator. Lynn sold the elevator business in 1980 and in 1986 retired from the fertilizer business as well.
Lynn was an active member of the Carson American Legion Post and the Masonic Lodge. His enjoyments included fishing and traveling. Lynn and Joella had been married 57 years when Lynn died on January 13, 2004 at the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. He had attained the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 8 days.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carl Sowers and Lyle Sowers, and sister Pauline Ryan. He is survived by his wife Joella of Carson; son Michael Sowers and his wife Sandi of Carson; daughter Vickie McDaniel and her husband Don of Grand Prairie, Texas; grandchildren Jeffrey Sowers and his wife Rhonda of Carson, Justine Crouse and her husband Andrew of Hastings, Iowa, Jeffery McDaniel and his wife Shelley and their children Jesse, Stacy and Jennifer, and Jeremy McDaniel and his wife Melanie and their children Austin and Colton, all of Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
