Lynn Mervin Turner, the youngest of five children of Leona V. (Leu) and Mervin Edward Turner, was born on December 26, 1950 in Red Oak, Iowa. He grew up in Hastings and Malvern, Iowa and graduated from Malvern High School in 1969. Lynn graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and received a B.A. in business marketing. While in college, Lynn acquired the nickname "Turkey", which followed him through the years, and was used by his Malvern friends. Shortly after graduation, he was employed at Botna Valley Grain in Malvern as an assistant manager. Lynn was later employed as a construction laborer through the union in Omaha, Nebraska. He worked several years for Kerstens & Lee Construction in Gretna, Nebraska, and later for the Kiewit Building Group in Omaha. Lynn was involved in construction at the Mid America Energy Plant near Council Bluffs, serving as a foreman, and worked at Midtown Crossing in Council Bluffs, and TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
Lynn was baptized and later confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hastings, Iowa. An avid golfer and a long-time member of the Fairview Country Club in Malvern, Lynn sponsored "Hole 3" in the Turner name, when the golf course was updated and renamed Fairview Hills Golf Club. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, watching sports and movies, coin-collecting, Yellowstone trips, being outdoors, and searching for those elusive morels.
Lynn was always willing to help anyone who needed it and was concerned about the welfare of others even as his health deteriorated. Material things held little value for Lynn. He treasured relationships with friends and family. Lynn loved spending time with his brother, sisters, and their families, and attending the annual week-long family reunions. He was always included in the many family activities of Mike and Angie Blackburn, whom he considered his 2nd family.
In May of 2011, Lynn was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He battled his cancer with quiet dignity and strength. Lynn went to be with his Savior on October 4, 2012 at Hospice with Heart in Glenwood, Iowa. He attained the age of 61 years, 9 months, and 8 days and was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law Lowell McMillen.
