Mildred Lonnevik, 95 of Glenwood, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2022.
Mildred H. Mehus was the first of seven children of Torkel and Olina Mehus. She was born on November 8, 1926, on the family farm near Belmond, IA. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Mildred graduated from Belmond High School in 1947 and attended Waldorf College.
August 13, 1949 was a special day in the history of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where a triple wedding was held for Mildred and Roger Lonnevik and Mildred's two cousins and their husbands, Ruth and Russell Lonnevik and Ester and Roy Larson. Mildred and Roger were blessed with four girls, Marcia Rae, Lois Fay, Signe Kay, and Sonja Mae. The Lonnevik family called many places home including Aberdeen, Britton and Pine Ridge SD, and Rolla and Belcourt ND, where Mildred taught elementary school and Roger was a social worker. In each location, they were active in their local Lutheran Church, where they met many of their life-long friends. During retirement, Mildred and Roger enjoyed 11 years of wintering in Apache Junction, AZ, accompanied by Mildred's sister Joan and her husband, Arlie Olson.
In 2006, Mildred and Roger relocated from their home in Belmond, IA, to Glenwood to be closer to their four girls and their families. In 2013, they moved to Linnwood Estates in Glenwood, where they lived for three years together. Roger passed away in February 2016 and home was never quite the same for Mildred without him by her side. Over the last six years, she found new ways to keep busy; her talent and passion was needlework. She spent much of her time creating Norwegian wall hangings, and she especially enjoyed creating personalized name-sake banners for family and friends. Mildred built meaningful friendships with the staff and residents at Linnwood, and she found purpose sharing her faith, leading daily bible studies, and especially enjoyed her assumed title of 'master button sewer' for her Linnwood neighbors.
Mildred is preceded in death by her parent,s Torkel and Olina Mehus; husband Roger; four sisters, Nellie Just, Nettie Kimball, Joan Olson, and Pearl Moudy; and two brothers, Donald Mehus and Jon Mehus.
Mildred is survived by her four daughters, Marcia (Dick) Cain, Lois (Ken) Whitacre, Signe Bonnet and Sonja (Paul) Cambridge, all of Glenwood, IA; grandchildren Corey (Jennifer) Cain, Cagney (Andrew) Tipton, Dain (Taylor) Whitacre, and Quentin (Dora) Marquez; five step-grandchildren, Mason, Miller, Taylor and Baker Cambridge, and Derek Whitacre; and eight great-grandchildren.
