To my mom with love and admiration, written by Suzanne Burgoin
Patricia Jean (Morgan) Schoening, the oldest of three girls of Mabel (Schuck) and Clifford Carl Morgan, was born on July 22, 1925 in Glenwood, Iowa. Fondly known as Pat, she grew up in Glenwood and graduated from the Glenwood High School in 1943. During high school, she worked at the Bradleys General Store in Glenwood, earning $1.50, which .01 was held out for tax, leaving her $1.49 per week. Also during her high school years, she met the love of her life, Gordon Green Schoening. Mom always told us girls, "Daddy was a lover"! Following school, she worked in the Treasurer's Office at the Mills County Courthouse. In 1963, mom began working for Iowa Power & Light before returning to the Mills County Courthouse where she worked as a Deputy Clerk. Mom took great pride in accuracy on the job and very seldom missed a day of work.
Mom and Dad were united in marriage on June 22, 1945 in Glenwood while he was home on boot leave from the Navy during WWII. They made their home on the Schoening farm near Mineola, Iowa and their marriage was blessed with three children, Suzanne, Bruce and Jodi. This city girl adapted quite well to life on the farm where she grew a huge garden, harvesting produce for her family, and learned to raise chickens. Mom was known for her delicious baking and cooking; favorites were her fried chicken, homemade potato salad, fresh pies for dessert, and her family got their favorite kind of cookie at Christmas. We knew after Sunday morning church service there was a delicious pot roast dinner waiting in the oven at her house. Along with flower gardening, Mom loved to quilt and do handwork. She enjoyed reading and her favorite holiday was Christmas; decorating, baking and she loved Christmas hymns and music. Above all, Mom was most proud of her family and Dad was her life. She would do anything for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and was the sweetest, most caring person to all who knew and loved her.
Mom was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola, taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was Dorcas Circle chairperson. She and Dad were members of the Mineola Pitch Card Club for 60 years. They loved to dance at the Mineola Ballroom, Peony Park, Sokol Hall in Omaha, and the Dance Hall in Minden, Iowa.
Mom and Dad were blessed with 70 years of marriage. Fifty-five years they lived on the farm before moving to live in Glenwood. Due to declining health and dealing with Alzheimer's the last few years of her life, Mom moved to the Glen Haven Home.
Mom passed away at Glen Haven on December 6, 2015, at the age of 90 years, 4 months, and 14 days and was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters,Margaret Ann Morgan and Carlene Farrell.
Those who will miss her dearly are her beloved husband Gordon Schoening;
