Phyllis was born on April 25, 1930 in Malvern, IA to Vaughn and Hazel (Beals) Hoover. She graduated from Malvern as an Oriole in 1947 and went to college at Northwest Missouri State University. She met Darrell Frederickson that summer at the Mills County Fair. They were introduced to one another by Clifford and JoAnn Cheney, mom’s first cousin.
Phyllis and Darrell Ellis Frederickson were married on May 9, 1948. Their first home was on the bottom, as she and dad always called it, located near Mile Marker 35 or 36 and just west of I-29, where one grain bin still stands today as to where their first home was. Eventually they moved to Malvern, where Phyllis worked at the Extension Office for a few years then the rest of her working years were spent at the Malvern Post Office from which she retired from. She worked part-time as a demonstration lady at Pace Warehouse and Sam’s Club.
Phyllis was busy with all kinds of clubs, from DAR (Daughter of the American Revolution), LTN, BPW (Business and Professional Women), Garden Club, to Bridge Club, Heritage Club, Deborah Society, Eastern Star, JUG Club (Just Us Girls). For several years, she was a NewsWatch 7 Weather watcher, on Mondays. Phyllis was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Malvern, a 63 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Harry Hammons Unit 520, where she handed out poppies, sitting either downtown in front of Mulholland Grocery or out front at Casey’s. Phyllis and Darrell also belonged to a local square dancing club which they enjoyed immensely. As a family they went to Kansas City to watch the Royals, to St. Louis to watch the Cardinals, to Chicago to visit and do the normal touristy stuff. They also traveled to Colorado, Montana, and took a trailer to Canada and the international Peace Gardens. Phyllis also traveled to Florida and Arizona, to stay with relatives after Darrell passed, also to Alaska and Hawaii, and anywhere else she thought she could go. Grass never grew under her feet. Malvern was her home and when she had to move away, it was quite tough on her.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Vaughn and Hazel Hoover; and beloved husband Darrell Frederickson.
Phyllis is survived by her three children, Karl and Sherry Frederickson, Kim and Darrell Wilson, and Karen and Richard Latimer; four grandchildren, Jesse Frederickson and wife Lindsey, Molly (Frederickson) and husband John Schneider, Nicole (Wilson) and husband Jason Ford, Grace (Latimer) and husband Gavin Pawlovich; two great granddaughters, Aubrie and Avery Frederickson; and two great grandsons, Vincent and Tristan Ford.
Mom always told me (Karen) don’t cry when I go because I know I will be welcomed home by all of my family members who went before me. I won’t be in any pain any longer, your dad and I will be dancing away with Clifford and JoAnn, as well as Kenny and Elaine, so please be happy and not sad for I have lived a long and good life and was blessed with all three of you kids and your families. I love you all.
