OBITUARY
Rodney Nickolas Greiner, 67, of Silver City, IA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.

Rod was born on May 3, 1958, in Council Bluffs, IA, one of six children of Lawrence Nickolas and Belva Jane (Cheney) Greiner. As a child, Rod discovered his love for county fairs and show animals through his local 4-H club. He graduated from Treynor High School in 1976 and began working at the feed mill in Silver City.

Rod met Ronda Queen through mutual friends at The Depot in Council Bluffs on April 17, 1979. They began dating and were married on June 5, 1982, at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Glenwood, where Rod was a lifelong member. After spending a year in Malvern, they moved to Silver City in 1983, where they had three children: Josh, Scott, and Ashleigh. In 1989, they moved to a farm outside of Silver City and later welcomed their youngest daughter, Kayla. Rod lived on the farm for the rest of his life, overseeing many renovations and transformations to the property over the years.

Throughout his life, Rod stayed busy with a wide range of jobs, hobbies, and community involvement. While raising his children, Rod farmed with his brothers and worked at the Treynor Co-op feed mill. He later sold feed for The Merc in Red Oak. In 2012, Rod co-founded 3G’s LLC with his brothers Don and Randy. In his younger years, he was active in tractor pulling and played softball. He served on the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department and even ran a mobile BBQ catering business with a friend. He also loved to golf and spent many years as a member of the Treynor Golf Board.

Rod shared his passion for agriculture with his community and family. He served as a long-time member of the Mills County Fair Board and as the Mills County Swine Superintendent. When his kids started 4-H in the early 90s, Rod started raising show pigs under the name “Greiner Show Pigs”. Since then, thousands of Greiner Show Pigs have been raised, sold, and delivered to 4-H participants all around the country. Rod’s love for show animals was passed down to each of his children and lives on in his grandchildren.

Beyond agricultural endeavors, Rod loved watching sports and was an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas City Royals. His children have many fond memories of watching wrestling, football, basketball, and baseball games with him. He also enjoyed traveling with his family. While his kids were in 4-H, the family took many trips for hog and calf shows across several states. In more recent years, he loved to go to the Ozarks with his kids and grandkids. Beach vacations were a favorite getaway for Rod and Ronda and they took trips together whenever they could.

Rod had a great sense of humor and was a master of one-liners. Anyone who talked to Rod will remember his famous phrase “at the end of the day!” used to settle debates, soften arguments, or wrap up stories. He loved a friendly competition and any opportunity to crack a joke or to make someone blush. He was known for his gift of finding friends everywhere he went and could always find someone to talk to at a golf course, bar, show ring, football game, or feed delivery route.

Family was at the center of Rod’s life. He never missed an opportunity to be present with his loved ones. Holidays, reunions, birthdays, weddings, kids or grandkids’ sporting events, fairs, tailgates, family vacations, or Sunday night dinners - Rod was there for all of it. Rod’s perfect day involved spending time with his grandkids, golfing with his friends, having dinner with his family and watching westerns in his chair. He was deeply loved, and he will be profoundly missed.

Rodney was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Greiner; unborn grandson, Daniel Raúl Stinga; mother-in-law, Judith Queen and father-in-law, Donald Queen.

Rodney is survived by his loving wife, Ronda Greiner of Silver City; children Joshua (Kaitlin) Greiner of Boone, IA, Scott (Carrie) Greiner of Glenwood, IA, Ashleigh (Austin) Croushorn of Silver City, and Kayla (Pablo) Stinga of Ames, IA; grandchildren William Lance, Mason, Brody, Annika, Klara, and Phillip; mother Belva Greiner of Silver City; siblings Randy (Lorri) Greiner of Malvern, IA, Donald (Holly) Greiner of Silver City, Debra (Jay) Lynch of Lafayette, CO, Delinda (David) Straatman of Boonville, MO, and Roger (Mary) Greiner of Glenwood; as well as many other relatives and a host of cherished friends.
