Sadie Mass

Sadie Katherine Mass, the youngest of three daughters of Sadie (Whan) and John Stephen Tree, was born on April 25, 1924 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She grew up and attended schools in Lincoln and was a high school graduate. Following school, Sadie worked at a movie theater.

Sadie met Otha Carl Mass at a dance in Lincoln while he served in the United States Air Force. Otha relocated to Victorville, California and they wrote many letters back and forth. Sadie and Otha were married on May 4, 1943 in Lincoln and they both went to California. Their marriage was blessed with a son, Otha Carl "Junior". Following Otha's discharge, the family moved back to the Malvern, Iowa area where Otha farmed.

Sadie was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed being a homemaker, living on the farm and took great pride in her home and family. Sadie also loved dancing. She and Otha enjoyed traveling, especially visiting Florida or California during the winters. Sadie loved taking care of her flowers both indoors and outside their home.

Sadie and Otha were married 45 years when Otha passed away on November 22, 1988 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sadie continued to live on the farm and was often helped by friends, Dixie and Raburn Benton, Jeff and Lorraine Zanders, and Bob Moore.

Sadie passed away on May 17, 2011 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 87 years and 22 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Otha Mass; and sisters, Verlee and Mary.

Sadie is survived by her son, Junior Mass and wife Carrie of Fort Collins, CO; three grandsons, Robert, Troy, and Anthony; one great granddaughter Chelsey; and friends.
