Glenwood, Iowa
Sharon Suzanne Smith, the youngest of three children of Jean Marcella (Everhart) and John Henry "Jack" Hudson, was born on July 25, 1938 in Red Oak, Iowa. Anne grew up and attended school in Hastings, Iowa.
Anne and Roger Ellsworth Smith were married on May 28, 1953 in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Terry Eugene, Roger Delaine, Philip Scott, Craig Alan, Kelli Janine, and Angela Danine.
Anne was a busy homemaker and mother, while Roger farmed, drove a semi truck, and worked heavy highway construction. In 1976, R.E. Smith and Sons Construction Company was established and worked jobs in Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri, while Anne was the bookkeeper for 15 years. When Roger retired from construction, he returned to farming and raised a few hogs on a small acreage and Anne was there to help him. She became a certified nurse's aide in January 1993 and a certified med aide in November 1993. Anne enjoyed caring for the elderly and for two years, worked at the Tabor Manor. In January 1997, she began work at the Manor of Malvern and retired in 2004.
Anne was a member of the Hastings United Methodist Church and a member of the Hastings Cemetery Board. In the early 80's, she sent a letter campaign that accomplished the first phase of a concrete driveway at the cemetery. Anne attended many school board and town council meetings throughout the years, and there were times she didn't sit very quietly. In 2007, Anne helped with organizing a "4-School Reunion" before Nishna Valley became a part of East Mills. Recently, she learned to crochet plastic mats with the "Happy Hookers" group that gathered at the church.
Anne enjoyed family camping trips and going to theme parks with Roger and the kids. She wouldn't ride the rides, but loved watching her family's enjoyment. Anne was a strong supporter of the Nishna Valley School, where her children attended and participated in school sports and activities. Anne was a wonderful cook, loved crossword puzzles, and attending concerts with her daughters. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
In 1994, Roger suffered a disabling stroke and Anne took care of him in their home for seven years before he moved to the Manor of Malvern. They were married almost 51 years, when Roger passed away at the Manor on May 26, 2004.
Over the past few years, Anne had her own heath issues, and with great determination, she overcame each one. It came as quite a shock to her family and friends, when Anne died unexpectedly on July 23, 2011 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She had attained the age of 72 years, 11 months, and 28 days. Anne was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roger Smith; son Philip Smith; two infant grandbabies; brother Roger "Bud" Hudson; sister Patricia Frain; and half sister Jacqueline Daggett and husband Joe.
Anne is survived by her children, Terry Smith and wife Debbie, and Delaine Smith and wife Julie, all of Malvern, Craig Smith and wife Mary Jean of Hastings, Kelli Huff and companion Matt Knoke, both of Treynor, IA, and Angi Pettit and husband Bill of Council Bluffs, IA; sisters-in-law, Jean Hudson of Hastings, and Cathy Stephens and husband Dale of Malvern; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, with one more due in September; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jully 29, 2011 at the Hastings United Methodist Church with interment in the Hastings Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hastings Fire & Rescue Department and Hastings Cemetery.
