Shirley Carlson

Shirley Mae Carlson, one of two children of Maurice Oscar Heckman and Georgia Francis (Pulliam) Heckman, was born in Brookfield, Missouri on August 8, 1928. Shirley attended school in Brookfield before her family moved to Glenwood, Iowa, where she attended high school.

Following school, Shirley worked for Pottawattamie Mutual Insurance and later as a receptionist for Dr. Ward DeYoung.

Shirley and Kenneth Neal "Bud" Carlson were married in Glenwood on September 10, 1947. They made their home in Silver City, Iowa and were blessed with a daughter, Paula Annette. Shirley was a member of the Glenwood Congregational Church and enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, knitting and her beloved poodle, Tinkerbell.

Shirley and Bud had been married 63 years when Shirley died suddenly at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on February 26, 2011. She had attained the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 18 days. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Don Heckman.

Shirley is survived by her husband Bud Carlson of Glenwood; daughter Paula Firbas and husband Steven; granddaughter Elyssa Peery and husband Jay all of Omaha; sister-in-law Marian Fitzwater of Harlan, IA; her poodle Tinkerbell; niece and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
