Thelma Hanson

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Thelma May Hanson, one of four children of Emily (Bourillette) and Lorenzo David Clark, was born at her family's home in Mills County, Iowa on December 11, 1912. Thelma's family lived on several farms throughout the county and Thelma attended country school before attending the Glenwood High School. When Thelma's brother Lawrence was 18 months old, he died suddenly. Soon after, Thelma's mother died and her father was left to care for five small children, the house and farm. Thelma along with her sister Edna, brother Erwin "Bud" and half brothers August and Roy grew up doing chores and helping their father on the farm.
In March of 1933, Thelma and Floyd Ray Hanson were united in marriage. They made their home in Mills County, living near the communities of Glenwood, Malvern, and Silver City. Their marriage was blessed with seven children; Harold, Fern, Richard, Francis, twins Gerald and Geraldine, and Sheryl.
In 1942, Thelma and Floyd lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa until moving to a farm in the hills north of Glenwood. In 1978, they moved to their home in Glenwood. Thelma and Floyd had been married 45 years when Floyd died in 1979. Thelma continued to live at her Glenwood home where she remained very active in the Glenwood Community Church. She actively volunteered for the next ten years at the Glenwood Store House, babysitting at church, and helping wherever needed. Thelma enjoyed sewing and crocheting and made many quilts and afghans.
In December of 2005, Thelma's health forced her to move to Council Bluffs, where she died on September 27, 2006 at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 16 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Floyd; son Harold Hanson; daughter Francis Hanson; half brothers August and Roy; sisters Edna Clark; and brothers Bud Clark and Lawrence Clark.
Thelma is survived by her children Fern Allan and husband Ted, and Richard Hanson and wife Wanda all of Council Bluffs, Gerald Hanson of Minnesota, Geraldine Herd and husband Ron of Scribner, NE, and Sheryl Clites and husband Steve of Smithville, MO; 17 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
