Virginia Perkins

Virginia Bernice Perkins, the oldest of five children of Elmer Otis and Gertie Belle (Hatcher) Brittain, was born on November 27, 1921 at Anderson, Iowa. Her family moved to Glenwood, Iowa when Virginia was young and she attended school and graduated from the Glenwood High School in 1939. Virginia and Hubert Perkins were married on September 29, 1940 in Rock Port, Missouri. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Dennis Gene, Gary Lee, and Sandra Kay. In the early years of their marriage Hubert worked as a farm laborer. In 1946, they began farming for themselves on a farm north of Tabor, Iowa. In 1957, the family moved to Glenwood, IA and Hubert started his own carpenter business. Virginia enjoyed being a homemaker and mother and in 1960 began her job as a librarian at the Glenwood Public Library. She continued working at the library until her retirement in 1984. Virginia loved to read and as she got older her colleagues at the library would order the large print addition of books and other materials so Virginia could continue to enjoy her favorite pastime. Virginia also enjoyed family gatherings, flowers, and country music.
Virginia and Hubert had been married 62 years when Virginia died at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA on March 12, 2003. She had attained the age of 81 years, 3 months, and 15 days. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dwight Brittain, and sister Dorothy Hauger.
She is survived by her husband Hubert Perkins of Glenwood; daughter Sandra Simmer and her husband Gary of Des Moines, IA; sons Dennis Perkins of Arizona and Gary Perkins of Tarkio, MO; sister Wilma Smith of Craig, NE; brother Delbert Brittain of Glenwood; sister-in-law Marilyn Brittain of Glenwood; eleven grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
