Walter E. Scott

–

Glenwood, Iowa

Walter E. Scott beloved brother, father and grandfather passed into the arms of our Lord on June 16, 2006, after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Born March 13, 1928, in Hastings, Iowa, Walt grew up on the farm. His father fell ill and could not work to provide for the family. This responsibility fell to Walter. From the age of 13, he worked full time. At first he did all the farming. Later, still a teenager, he was able to work year round and rent a house for his mom and family; this home had electricity, and he bought a refrigerator and a gas stove, all firsts in the Scott household.

His dad had taught him that if he could do a man's work he could earn a man's pay. Also, if you are hired for a job, finish it. Walt took great pride in his work. He was big and strong, a man's man. He believed that a man's work defined him, not by what he did, but how he did it.

In 1957 he moved to the San Gabriel Valley in California. He went to work for Bekins Van Lines in Hollywood and later Montebello. In his career he drove over 3 million miles without a single accident. He always worked to give each customer the best possible moving experience. While at Bekins he was honored to move a portion of the Gemini capsule from California to Florida. He won awards for his skill as a driver and for his safety record.

After retiring in 1993,Walt lived with his son, David, and daughter-in-law Connie, in San Juan Capistrano. These years were filled with baseball games (Angels) and long walks along the creek with "Kelly", a Golden Retriever.

Walter is survived by his brother, Ed Scott, in Kingman, Arizona; his sister, Joan Karas, in Riverside Ca; his brother-in-law Orville Dunbar in Red Oak, Iowa; his children (all in California) Bruce Scott in Azusa; Sandra Collins in Rancho Capistrano; Sheryl Lovell in Victorville; David Scott in San Juan Capistrano; and 8 grandchildren Elizabeth Scott, Jim Scott, Devon Collins, Brett Collins, Christopher Lovell, Dawnell Lovell, Kristin Scott, and Michael Scott. Walt's granddaughter, Dawnell is serving in the Army currently stationed in England, but did serve a year of duty in Iraq. Walt's grandson Michael is a Peace Corp Volunteer currently stationed in Ecuador.

He will be laid to rest in North Grove Cemetery, Hastings, Iowa, where his wife, Betty Fern, was buried in 1983.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in his name are made to the North Grove Cemetery Association.
